Inspiring Quotes and Sketchnotes from Eric Thomas and TGIM Season 7

Why do you GRIND? What’s your WHY? Why do you wake up in the morning?

At the end of the Third Quarter of 2013, Eric Thomas (ET) wrapped up TGIM Season 7 with two very powerful messages: ET’s Game Changer and This Is Why I Grind.

This season was definitely taken to another level as we saw ET’s son, Jalin Thomas, graduate from high school, and begin his first year at Michigan State University, officially breaking the cycle and recreating history!

Big congratulations to ET, Jalin and the entire family. We know this is just the beginning!

And so as we eagerly anticipate and wait for TGIM Season 8 (which I believe is just around the corner), I wanted to take a moment to look back on some of my favorite, and very inspiring quotes, and messages, from  TGIM Season 7 (just like I did with TGIM Season 6).

I also want to highlight the inspiring TGIM Sketchnotes Marie-Judith Jen Louis continues to create for all the TGIM episodes. They do a wonderful job on providing not only a refresher on the key points from each TGIM episode, but also including some inspiring imagery to drive the message home as well.

Thank you for continuing to share your creative talents with us Marie!

So, without further ado, here are all sixteen episodes from TGIM Season 7, along with three inspiring quotes from each episode and Marie’s TGIM Sketchnotes. Be sure to share your key takeaways and favorite quotes from TGIM Season 7 in the comments below.

TGIM Season 7 Episode 1: AMAZING

If you are alive, I know you ain’t reached your best yet, right? You got more! You could do more! You could see more! You could be more! Alright! You gotta hear me!

My first question to you is if you were amazing – like if your life was amazing, what would it look like?
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 1: AMAZING

Make a commitment to yourself today. Vow to yourself today! That you will make whatever sacrifice! that you will pay whatever it takes! That you will do whatever you have to do! To be amazing.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 1: AMAZING

TGIM Season 7 Episode 2: SHUT UP!

Look, some of you man, the reality is, the reason why your dreams are not a reality – for real, like you could be walking in it right now – but you talk too much!

Look, I didn’t get to where I am today doing a whole lot of talking. That’s why I get up at three o’clock in the morning, cause I got stuff to do.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 2: SHUT UP!

Man it’s your boy ET saying, listen to me, if it was easy, everyone would do it. But can I tell you something? It might not be easy, but it’s simple. Alright? In the blueprint to success, everybody that ever blew up, everybody that ever made it from the bottom to the top, everybody, they put in hours in the studio! They put in hours! So, if it was easy, everybody would do it. But remember what I told you, without struggle, there is no progress. Alright? So stop wishing. Stop waiting. And start working!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 2: SHUT UP!

TGIM Season 7 Episode 3: Work On Your Work

I’m telling you; going to the next level is about the W, the O, the R and the K baby. It’s about WORK!

So here’s the problem: you’re going to work, but you not working on your work! Hahaa! Listen to me! You’re going to work! You’re working every day. Some of you nine hours, some of you ten hours, some of you twelve hours, and you like, ‘ET, I can’t – why is there a glass ceiling?’ There’s a glass ceiling because there’s a glass ceiling on your performance. You are not getting any better. How you speak is no better. How you write is no better. How you play is no better. You’re no better than what you were last year. And you might have been really good last year, but you not great. Or you might have been great and you’re not phenomenal. So you’re locked. You’re locked! You’re locked! Why? Because performance – you’re not increasing your performance.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 3: Work On Your Work

If you want more money, if you want a promotion, if you want to leave a legacy, you gotta increase! You can’t stay where you are and think things around you are going to grow! If you keep doing what you’ve always done, good or bad, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 3: Work On Your Work

TGIM Season 7 Episode 4: Work While Working

I’m starting this series off, Season 7, with work, because it is the one thing that has separated your boy. Listen to me. It’s separated your boy, not from other people. I’m not just talking about my competition right now. This thing separated me from being average, good, to taking me to great. Alright? WORK!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 4: Work While Working

My final one is, ‘What’s your attitude?’ Like for real, for real, some of you going to work and you got that ‘I got to’ not, not, ‘I get to’ attitude. And I’m telling you, attitude is everything. Attitude is everything!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 4: Work While Working

Look, I ain’t telling you what I read. I’m telling you what I experienced. And I went from being average, to good, to great because not only do I work, but now I work, while I’m at work. And some of you are at work, you are physically there, but your mind is on the other side of town. So do me a huge favor, literally work while you’re at work.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 4: Work While Working

TGIM Season 7 Episode 5: A NEW LEGACY

Man, I’m pumped! Listen to me: impossible, is nothing! Are you hearing what I’m telling you? Impossible, is nothing!

So I just got a quick question to ask you. Like, literally, do you understand the power of one? Do you understand by me just waking up and reaching greatness, that it wasn’t just about me getting a four-year degree, a Master’s degree, PhD; look, I don’t need all of that to do what do. But I did it because I wanted to break a cycle and start a brand new era. So are you hearing me? The power of one man! It don’t take twenty people! It don’t take ten people! It don’t take five! It take one! Are you hearing what I’m saying? ONE!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 5: A NEW LEGACY

Fathers! At the end of this thing – fathers! – I challenge you, fathers! Look, I just watched it again before we put it on, I started crying. Fathers! Like this ain’t no video y’all! This my life! Fathers, step up to the plate! No more, no more, no more excuses! No more good reasons! No more victim mentality! Take responsibility. Fathers! All you gotta do is be present. My son graduated from high school and he on his way to college! Are you hearing me? He’s on his way to college. He got an intern! And why is he doing all of this? Because I was present! No excuses! No good reasons! I don’t care if the mamma trippin’! I don’t care what the courts say. You fight for your right! You be there for your child! I don’t care what happen! You do whatever you gotta do to be in your child’s life! No excuses! None, whatsoever! I don’t care how many jobs you need to get! I don’t care if you gotta work at McDonalds! I don’t care what you gotta do! Make no excuse! But you be in your child’s life! My daddy wasn’t in mine, ain’t nothing I can do about that! But what I could do for my son, was to make sure he didn’t feel the pain I felt! The hurt I felt! The rejection I felt! The abandonment I felt! So I’m challenging you, when you watch this video, at the end of it, make a vow to step your game up, if you ain’t stepping it up. Step your game up! And be in your child’s life. Because they need you!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 5: A NEW LEGACY

TGIM Season 7 Episode 6: ENERGY + EFFORT

For real, I’mma say it again. And I want to make sure you hear it loud and clear! Nobody owes you anything! Are you listening to what I’m telling you? Like, it’s YOUR dream! And you gotta invest in YOUR dream more than anybody else invests in your dream! Nobody gave us money. Nobody said, ‘Look, we gonna invest in this thing.’ But we still did it! We still made a way out of no way. We still sold 25,000 copies out of the garage. So, nobody owe you nothing!

So I need you to do me a huge favor, ’cause it don’t cost nothing! You don’t have to have money to make it happen. How do I know? ‘Cause I ain’t start with none. High school dropout. Homeless! But let me tell you what it takes. You gotta get this before you leave! This is what it takes! It takes energy! And it takes effort! That’s all you need to do to be successful! Here what I’m telling you! You need to put more energy into what you doing than anybody else! Are you hearing me? You need to put more energy into it!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 6: ENERGY + EFFORT

It’s your boy ET saying, listen to me; I don’t care what happened yesterday when you got up. If your dream ain’t a reality, don’t give up, don’t give in. I just want you to go a little harder. Yup! Go a little harder! Put forth a little bit more energy! Give me a little bit more effort! But don’t give up! And don’t give in!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 6: ENERGY + EFFORT

TGIM Season 7 Episode 7: IMPOSING YOUR WILL

Come on! Bring it in! You know what time it is! That’s right. It’s Third Quarter Living! Listen to me very closely man; I need y’all to do me a huge favor! It’s time to impose your will! You hear what I’m telling you? Look, look, we way past ‘I gotta dream it’. Like for real, we way past ‘Put it up on the wall. And write down your dreams and your goals.’ Listen to me, we way past talking about it! This the third quarter! Like, this is, this is the time where, where you impose your will! This is the time where you leave your mark!

Are you hearing what I’m saying? Like, you gotta get it! Like after this it’s over, it’s fourth quarter. And what I don’t want for you; for real, for real, listen to me, I don’t want December 31, I don’t want you looking back at Third Quarter Living, Second Quarter Living, First Quarter Living. Listen! I don’t want you November, talking about October, talking about September, ‘I could have. What I should have.’ Listen to me, you can’t afford to have, one more year, where you just talking! You can’t afford to have one more year, where you just dreaming. Like, you can’t – listen to me! You can’t afford – this life and death! You cannot afford to be talking about it no more! Like, this is it. You got, you got family members on the line. You got, you got dreams on the line. You have opportunities on the line!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 7: IMPOSING YOUR WILL

You got an opportunity of a lifetime! How do I know? Every day you wake up there are 86,400 opportunities in a day. I need you to take advantage of’em. Are you hearing me?
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 7: IMPOSING YOUR WILL

TGIM Season 7 Episode 8: THE DECISION

And the problem with some of you right now, the reason why you ain’t, you ain’t in your Citi Field, the reason why you ain’t looking at the Jumbotron screen and seeing yourself, the reason is because, it’s simple, you have not made a decision yet! You like a deer in headlights! You like a squirrel in the middle of the road! You back and forth! And back and forth! And back and forth! I’m telling you, once you make a decision, and you go ALL IN, and you say, ‘I ain’t quitting ’till I get there! I ain’t giving up! I ain’t giving in! I will do whatever it takes! Whatever it takes! I’ll do whatever it takes to be successful!’ And when you make that decision, YOU! When you look YOU in the mirror! When you tell YOURself that, ‘Look, I’m through! I will do whatever it takes!’ I guarantee to you, that’s the day your Citi Field begins to happen.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 8: THE DECISION

Number two; you better hear what I’m telling you. After you make that decision, you better have on you this sense of urgency, like, you ain’t got forever! Are you hearing what I’m telling you? I’ve said it to you before. I will keep saying it until the day I die. Listen to me! You have to take advantage of an opportunity of a lifetime, in the lifetime of the opportunity!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 8: THE DECISION

So number one; make a decision! Quick! NOW! And then a sense of urgency. You don’t have forever. You gotta make that thing happen. And you gotta make it happen now because if you don’t take advantage of it right now, three months from now it may not be here you. Six months from now, that same opportunity might not exist. You gotta do it today! You gotta do it right now! You gotta do it while you have time! And finally, relentless! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop! You go through any obstacle! You go through any test! You go through any trial! You start over if you have to! You look at it again if you have to! You re-analyze it if you have to! But relentless! You break that wall down before that wall break you down!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 8: THE DECISION

TGIM Season 7 Episode 9: WHAT’D YOU EXPECT?

I apologize. I skipped a step. And I forgot to tell you. Listen to me. Yup! You showed up to the test. That’s right. You showed up to the bar exam. Absolutely. You showed up to the job interview. Yup. You got married. Yup. Yup. You made some decisions this year, for real, you’ve never made before. But what you’re doing wrong! I’m sorry! I should have poured into you. I should have told you first! Before I told you to make a decision! Listen to me! You gotta hear what I’m telling you. Get this one in your spirit! You did it. You showed up. You put in 120. But you didn’t expect it! Alright, I’mma say it again in case you missed me. You didn’t expect it. Like, you took the test. But you didn’t expect to win! You sat down. You studied. You did study. You got with the tutor. You did. 100%. You did. You stayed up long hours. You did. You sacrificed some stuff. You did. Absolutely. And I’m proud of you. But what you’re doing wrong – listen to me! Is you didn’t expect to pass!

Some of you, you been hurt. Listen to me. You been hurt! Your whole life, you been hearing people tell you what you can’t do. And you gotta do me a huge favor. You have to stop accepting the reality of other people. And you gotta accept your own reality. Are you hearing me? I love my mother! I love my family man, to life! I love my professors. I’m grateful for what they’ve done for me. They’ve helped me to get from one place academically to the next. But let me tell you something. As much as I love my mother, as much as I love my family, as much as I love my wife; I do not accept anybody’s reality for Eric Thomas, but Eric Thomas! Are you hearing me? I walk in my reality! I don’t walk into other people’s limitations.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 9: WHAT’D YOU EXPECT?

So, number two; I need you to activate your faith. You heard your boy ET. I need you to active, your faith. I need you to walk in faith. I don’t care what your reality is. I don’t care where you were born. I don’t care what happened in your life. Listen to me, I don’t care. I need you to walk; faith is the substance of things hoped for! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! You heard what I said! Your boy went from where he is back in the day, to where I am now ’cause of faith! I activated my faith! FAITH; is the substance of things hoped for! The evidence of the things I seen! I ain’t got to see it out here! As long as I can see it here [my mind] and in here [my heart], it’s my reality!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 9: WHAT’D YOU EXPECT?

TGIM Season 7 Episode 10: MAKE A DECISION

So, for real; some of you man, you keep crying! You complaining about your job. You complaining about where you are financially. You complaining about your relationships. You complaining about your opportunities. You complaining, complaining, complaining! Listen to me. You murmuring and complaining. You complaining, complaining, complaining! SHUT UP! Stop complaining and do me a favor. If you wanna make a difference, all you gotta do is one thing. This is how you get started. You want something different? Listen to me. All you gotta do, is make a decision. That’s it!

And for those of you who been making the wrong decision, all you gotta do is make the right decision. But if you want to make a difference, make a decision. Are you hearing what I’m telling you? What I’m trying to do for you, to take you to that next level, is I’m trying to give you control of your life back. Some of you, you ain’t got control. You talking about your job. You got control! Listen to me. Some of you talk about your economics like you ain’t got no control. You gotta control! I want you to know that your life right now is the sum total of your decisions. Not your mamma’s decisions! Not your daddy’s decisions! Listen to me, even if you made their decisions, you decided to make their decisions. So I need you to do me a favor. I need you, from this day forward, for the rest of your life, make a decision.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 10: MAKE A DECISION

This a call of action. I’mma give you my life, so you can do it. I’mma let you get out of here ’cause you need to go look in the mirror. I made a decision. I made a decision about four, five years ago that I would never be broke again. I made a decision that I would experience financial freedom. Are you hearing what I’m saying? I made a decision! That’s right! I made a decision that I was gonna live the way I wanted to live. I made a decision I was going to be healthy. I was going to be healthy! I was not going to be in unhealthy relationships. I made a decision! Are you hearing what I’m saying? I made a decision with my health that I didn’t want to be chunky cheek monkey in the morning. I didn’t want to be chunky cheek. So I made a decision. Listen to me! I made a decision that I was going to start working out. Can I be honest with you? The weights have been in my basement for months! Are you hearing me? The treadmill had been there for months! Are you hearing me? The barbell boy, they had been there for months. I didn’t pick’em up until I made a decision!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 10: MAKE A DECISION

TGIM Season 7 Episode 11: THE SHOULDER TAP

This what I need you to do for me. Now Carl gonna put this up on the screen. On one side: Decision. You already made it. So whatever your number one decision was, write it down. But listen to me! If you’re going to be prepared, and qualified, when that opportunity of a lifetime comes, you gotta make your decisions accountable. To who? To your actions! So first side, BOOM; Decision. Second side, I want you to write down every single action it’s gonna take, to make that decision a reality.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 11: THE SHOULDER TAP

You hearing me? We had to buy a camera. We had to buy a microphone so it could sound better. We had to put a schedule together. We had to have content. We had to put up a website. We gotta get a YouTube channel. So, a lot of y’all, you made a decision last week, you pumped up, you excited, you hot, you ready, you on fire! But let me tell you something, that decision gonna die out. That decision gonna die out in September. It’s gonna die out in October. You gonna lose that fire in November. You gonna be ready to quit in December. And the only way what you’re thinking, about that life you thinking about right now, the only way it’s going to happen, is that you gotta hold that decision accountable! And how do you do it? You get that piece of paper. You get that pen. And you sit down right now. And you write down again: Decisions. You write down all the decisions. I don’t care how many you got, you write them down. You don’t let nobody tell you, you can’t live it, you can’t have it, you can’t be it, just ’cause they can’t do it. Hahaaaa! You better hear what I’m telling you! You don’t make their reality, your reality. But I’mma tell you this. You are a fool, if you think you just going to write the decisions down and you not prepared. And you not qualified. And you think you just gonna have it. You think you just gonna be it. But if you are willing to write every single action down, that it’s going to take to make that a decision a decision! I’m your boy ET, so I’mma hold you accountable.

TGIM Season 7 Episode 12: OVERCOMING ANY OBSTACLE – I CAN, I WILL, I MUST

Alright, for real; this a different TGIM. I just need you to do me a huge favor. Come on, come on, work with me. Work with me. I CAN. [clap, clap, clap, clap] I WILL. Hahaaa! I MUST! Are you hearing what I’m telling you? Now I’m not an English teacher, so, I’m not asking you to say this just to be saying it. Like I want you to speak life into that thing! Whatever it is! What’s frustrating you. Like, for real, you feel like, ‘E, I can’t fail another test.’ Like, ‘I can’t go through another day like this.’ Like, ‘E, I can’t handle it! I can’t take it!’ Listen to me very closely. Say it with me! And breathe life into whatever that thing is. We gonna speak life into death right now. Whatever your circumstances are, say it with me: I CAN. Yup. I need you to feel it. I CAN. I remember when I was homeless, I was like, ‘I CAN get through this!’ Listen to me: I WILL! I WILL get through this. Aaahhhhhhhhhhh! Wooooooooooooo! I MUST get through this!

This is the TGIM where I tell you, you can get through it! And then second, you just gotta out-last some stuff. That’s for real. Haters – I had all kinds of stuff and I just made up in my mind, Look, I might not have been stronger. Listen to me. I might not have been smarter. I might not have been brighter. But I made up in my mind, ‘I’m gonna get through this!’
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 12: OVERCOMING ANY OBSTACLE – I CAN, I WILL, I MUST

And I’m telling you, some things in life; it’s not about what you think it is. It’s just about making up your mind, that you are not gonna give up, you are not gonna quit. And so your boy went from being homeless to where I am now, and I failed classes guys. Listen to me. Just because you failed, don’t make you a failure. And just because you lost, don’t make you a loser. And what I did, that most people are not willing to do, is I just never gave up! Consistent! I just never quit!

TGIM Season 7 Episode 13: I CAN, I WILL, I MUST… I DID!

Number One: Perspective. You hear me? Perspective. I need y’all to do me a huge favor. Perspective. Just because it don’t look like a blessing, don’t mean it ain’t a blessing.

And that’s where; listen to me, the successful and the unsuccessful are separated. In the delay. Listen to me. Delay don’t mean denied. Catch me! Delay don’t mean denied. Delay just means you gonna have to wait a minute. And so what I’m telling you is; this where you start separating the successful from the unsuccessful. When the unsuccessful are in delay, they get nervous, they get worried, right? They give up. They quit! They stop. They surrender. ‘Cause they don’t see what they think they should see. But when the successful are in delay, we, listen to me, we work while we wait! We work while we wait! We grind in between time! Hear me again! We work while we wait! We work! We work! We grind, in between time! We don’t give up! We don’t surrender! We don’t quit! We see differently. Our perspective is different. And because our perspective is different, our outcomes are different. Our rewards are different.
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 13: I CAN, I WILL, I MUST… I DID!

Are you hearing me? Just because it says trial on the package, or tribulation on the package, or pain on the package, or wait on the package; it don’t mean it ain’t a blessing inside. And most of you turn around when you see pain. But those of us who have the right perspective, we [successful people] approach it when it say pain. When we see trial! Tribulation! We don’t give up or give in. We know the blessing is on the inside.

Everything you gonna get in 2014, has everything to do with how you finish 2013. So if you think you can kind of chill out? If you think you could start coasting? Look, you are sadly mistaken.

So do me a favor. Stop looking for results. Stop looking for accomplishments. Stop looking for affirmations. Stop looking for somebody to pat you on the back. And you just get up on Monday and grind. And get up on Tuesday and grind. And get up on Wednesday and grind. And get up on Thursday and grind. And get up on Friday and grind! And if you grind; no days off, no holidays, no snow days, no weekends off! Listen to me, no birthdays! You heard me! No holidays again! You heard me! You keep grinding! And you stay persistent! And you locked in! One day you gonna wake up. And you don’t know what day it’s gonna be, I can’t tell you what day it’s going to be. But one day you gonna wake up and you gonna be exactly where you dreamed you would be. If you work hard enough, you might be even further than what you dreamed.

TGIM Season 7 Episode 15: ET’s Game Changer

And when I read Gifted Hands; that was the first book I ever read. And after that I read, and I read, and I read, and let me tell y’all something; you talk about the crossover. I ask young people all the time, ‘The crossover. Like, what’s so sweet about the crossover?’ They say, ‘ET, the crossover allows you to change direction. Or the crossover gives you space.’ Listen to me; reading was my crossover. Reading took me in a different direction. From being a high school dropout and homeless, and it took me to where I am now. It gave me separation; separation from my past life, separation from certain things, separation from certain environments. Are you hearing me? You gotta hear what I’m telling you.

So do me a huge favor young people: read, read, read, read! Some of you thinking, ‘ET talking to high school students.’ Look, don’t, don’t kid yourself. I don’t care who you are, there’s room for improvement.

If you’re trying to go up the corporate ladder. You wanna be a better husband, a better father. I don’t know. A better NFL player. A better NBA – you don’t – listen to me. The way you play the game, can evolve, and go to a whole ‘nother level, by just not working on your skills, but reading, and taking your mind. Why? We are all novice at something. Some of us are masters. But none of us are experts at everything. So reading allows us to learn, and see, and do things that we could never have done, in our strength. Or with our own knowledge. So do me a favor. I don’t care who you are! Pick up a book! Read! Read! Read! Read!

The days I want to hit that alarm clock, I think about my why! I can’t quit! My son, $25,000 a year. I can’t stop! He counting on me! My daughter! I can’t quit! I can’t stop! I can’t get tired! I can’t give up! I can’t give in! My momma counting on me! My wife is counting on me! Listen to me! When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe! When you ain’t got nothing left in your tank! You gotta think about the people in your life that you doing this for! And then if you could think about them, you could go one more mile! You could go one more day at work! You could find a – you can find a scholarship!
– Eric Thomas, TGIM Season 7 Episode 16: This Is Why I Grind

I can’t. I wish I could back off, but this is fourth quarter. I wish I could tell you something else. I wish I could tell you, ‘You tired, go take a break.’ I wish I could tell you, ‘You tired, rest for a year.’ I wish I could tell you that, that it’s gonna get easier. I wish I could tell you it’s gonna get easier! I wish I could tell you that, ‘If you just keep going, it’s gonna get lighter.’ The weight is gonna get lighter. I wish I could tell you that. But that’s not the truth! The truth is; you gotta find something within! You gotta find something within! And that’s gotta push you! And that’s gotta elevate you! And that’s gotta drive you! And that’s gotta move you!
